Symptoms

Warning Signs & Symptoms.

If your pet falcon is suffering from an eye disease, it will typically show distinct, visible changes in its behavior and appearance. Watch closely for the following indicators:
    • Discharge: Watery, thick white, or yellowish fluid that may crust over the eyelids.
    • Squinting & Swelling: Holding one or both eyes closed, frequent blinking, or swollen, red, and scaly eyelids.
    • Cloudiness: A grey, cloudy, or glassy appearance on the eyeball itself.
    • Behavioral Changes: Lethargy, loss of appetite, rubbing the face or eyes against the wing or perches, and an inability to find perches or food.
    • Physical Lesions: Wart-like or blister-like growths around the featherless areas of the eyes and beak.

Common Eye Diseases

  • Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Inflammation of the tissue lining the eyelids. It is generally caused by bacterial or viral infections (like Mycoplasma), physical trauma from cages, or environmental fume exposure.
  • Avian Pox (Avipoxvirus): A viral disease spread by insects that results in blister-like or crusty, wart-like lesions around the eyelids. If untreated, it can obstruct vision.
  • Cataracts: Clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which can lead to blindness. This is often tied to nutritional deficiencies (especially Vitamin E), infections, or metabolic diseases.
  • Ocular Trauma & Corneal Ulcers: Falcon eyes are large and prominent, making them highly susceptible to scratches or injuries during flight, hunting, or transport.
  • Hypovitaminosis A: A Vitamin A deficiency can lead to “dry eye” (Keratoconjunctivitis sicca), leaving the eyes vulnerable to infection.
